Cleaning wand on a detailed Persian-style rug

Antique rug cleaning is mostly about restraint. An old rug may have a dry, brittle foundation, dyes that were never fully fixed, thin areas, and repairs made long ago by different hands. Washing it the way you would a newer rug can tear fibers or move color. Chelsea Carpet & Rug Cleaning cleans antique and older rugs from Manhattan homes with a slow, hand-done process that adjusts to each piece’s condition.

What Makes an Old Rug Fragile

How We Clean Antique Rugs

  1. Condition assessment. We examine the rug front and back, flex the foundation gently to check for rot, and record weak areas and earlier repairs before any work starts.
  2. Gentle dusting. Dry soil comes out at a lower intensity than we would use on a sturdy rug. Fragile areas are dusted by hand.
  3. Color testing. Every color gets its own test. If a dye moves, we change the solution, the water temperature or the whole plan.
  4. Hand washing. We use a mild, wool-safe solution and soft brushes, working in sections. No rotary machines, no heavy scrubbing.
  5. Careful rinsing. The rug is rinsed thoroughly but without flooding weak spots.
  6. Supported drying. The rug dries flat and fully supported, with steady airflow, so wet fibers don’t stretch under their own weight.
  7. Finishing. Pile is groomed by hand and the fringe cleaned and combed straight.

Sometimes the safest answer is a lighter clean. If a rug is too weak for a full wash, we will say so and explain what can be done instead. Newer pieces go through our standard rug cleaning process.

Before You Send Us an Antique Rug

Do not fold an old rug in half for transport; creases can split a dry foundation. Roll it loosely instead, or simply leave it flat and let our team roll it at pickup. Rug pickup and delivery are free, and we carry rugs down walk-up stairs and through building lobbies with care.

Do not try spot cleaners or hot water on an old rug at home. If something spills, blot with a white cloth and call us before it dries.

FAQ

Will cleaning harm the value of an antique rug?

Careful cleaning removes grit that wears the fibers down, which helps preserve the rug. Aggressive cleaning is what causes harm, which is why we test and adjust at every step.

Can you clean a rug that already has holes?

Often yes. We protect weak areas during washing and point them out to you afterwards.

Do you clean other textiles in the home?

We also clean carpet and upholstery. See the full list on our services page.
